Why is play important for adults?

When I was young my mom and grandma played on a weekly volleyball team, and sometimes my sister and I got to go. I have fond memories of getting to spend time with this group of women, laughing and playing. My grandma even played volleyball in the senior olympics! During family gatherings we would set up a net, which fostered my love for the game. I played volleyball in middle school and my freshman year of high school. I stopped playing at the end of my freshman year, and didn’t pick it back up until October of 2024.

I saw a post on facebook and decided to take my own advice and put myself out there. The first night I was nervous as hell, but it all worked out. It also helped that everyone else was new too. I often encourage my clients to try new things - even when they are anxious or afraid. I can say that it’s hard to do, but is absolutely necessary for personal growth.

I play most Tuesday evenings, and it has done wonders for my mental and physical health. It is also some of the most fun I have in my week.

Why is play important for adults?

According to the National Institute for Play, it is important for adults because it improves our mood, ability to tolerate stress, increases our problem solving skills and memory, and can provide us with a sense of belonging.

Many adults can see play as childish or a waste of time. However, allowing yourself to enjoy something just for the fun of it, and not tying it to the outcome allows us to just be in the moment. This doesn’t just have to be team sports, it could be reading, playing a game, doing a puzzle, going for a walk, etc.

I encourage you to allow that child-like wonder into your day. Life is full of stress and responsibilities, give yourself the space to play.

Are you ready for change?

Love and light,

Kelsey
